Sharing does not shrink the pencil. Taking turns finishes both lines.

Hi Aavya. The class had to write one line, and the only sharp pencil on the bench was Aavya's. Meera's pencil had snapped in the middle. She stared at the paper as if the paper might write itself. Aavya thought, if I hand this over, my line will stay half done. So Aavya bent down and started. Meera's eyes went wet. Then Aavya stopped. Why? Because the teacher had said both pages had to fill, not just one. Aavya set the pencil in the middle. One line for Meera. One line for Aavya. The pencil did not get too small. Both pages filled, and Meera laughed. Aavya, when there is one thing and two hands, taking turns is the fix.
