Hi Aavya. On Diwali night the lane was bright with diyas. Then the crackers began. Bang! Bang! Moti, the brown street dog, ran under a scooter and shook all over, ears flat. Aavya wanted to pull Moti out and hug him. But Aavya stopped. Why? Because a scared dog may bite, even a friendly one. So Aavya filled a bowl with water and slid it slowly near the scooter. Then Aavya sat on the step, not too close, and Dadi helped light one small diya. Aavya asked the big boys, please, can you burst them at the other end of the lane? They looked at Moti and nodded. Slowly the bangs went far away. Moti drank, then put his nose on Aavya's shoe. Aavya, Diwali is the festival of lights. A quiet light can be the kindest gift.
